Allegra, I don't switch first and second language just because I only had two hours of Spanish lesson this year (and it was just because I was too bad at Latin to take only two hours...)...so I didn't learn anything about Spanish literature...So, even though one part of my family is Spanish and live in Grenade, even though I have been speaking Spanish since I was ten, I can't...because of the examination...
But, after, at the faculty, I think I'll switch...

Thanks for the corrections...as you can see I make A LOT of mistakes!!! I hope I'll improve my English because I don't want to fail at the examination just because of this subject! Laughing

I'm not good enough in English, I think I'll have to improve myself so that I can speak more easily. I may go to America this year, it would be really great Shocked

Natitouto: Can you give me your passion for Spain? Razz
My mother wanted me to take English as my first language, but I wanted to do German, and then for my seconde language, I also wanted to do German but I had to take Spanish..
I didn't choose, that's why I think I'm not fond of Spanish.

I don't really know how to give you my passion! In fact, I'm just fond of Spain because one part of my family lives in Grenade, and I have spent my holidays there since I was a baby! So, it's like another part of myself! Laughing

My oh my, a German topic doesn't seem to interest loads of people... Well, bad luck Mr. Green

Granted, German is a difficult language, and the more you learn, the less you seem to know, but... Rolling Eyes

I think when you like Germany, or something that can remind you of German (except this stupid band, Tokio Hotel... pretty useless!), it goes easier.

As for Spanish, when you like the literature/atmosphere/food (^^?) of the country, it's surely easier to get interested in the language... Personally, I don't really like Spanish, because I don't know loads of things about Hispanophone countries... I do prefer English. (I do, I do! I do believe in fairies, I do, I do! ahem, I love the Peter Pan movie, sorry ^^'). Or German. But especially English, with its British atmosphere, such a rich and fascinating literature, with its so beautiful cities (LONDON <3)... Well, I may not stick to facts... However, English is kind of special to me.

When I was eleven, I didn't have the choice either between German/English/Spanish, actually. =S
My parents wanted me to study German, because the German-class at my school tended to be "better" than the other classes, so here I went... And when you choose German, you inevitably have to choose English as a second language. Then, in highschool, I didn't have the choice for Spanish : when you go to L class in the Franco-German school, you have two obligatory options, which are: Spanish and maths... I would have prefered Russian, or Chinese, or Japan... But nevermind, now that I'm (on the point to be) in Hi-pow-kaygne [I try to imagine how an Englishman would pronounce it Mr. Green ], I don't study Spanish anymore.

And to tell the truth... I won't miss it Laughing

Japanese is also a quite difficult language, not to speak but to write, especially when you start learning the kanjis (actually, you can start learning kanjis in the first year, but it's more interesting in the second year). There can be so much prononciations for only one kanji, that when you have learned more than two hundred, it becomes hard Laughing

I think I won't miss Spanish too if I go in hypokhâgne because I think I'm going to take Latin and Ancient Greek as a beginner.

Well,well... I've been quite unfair with German Mr. Green .
Although I hate grammar,conjugaison..., I have to say that it can be a nice language to speak. (German is philosophy's language, isn't it?So, it must be charming to speak...)
But as you said, with German: "the more you learn, the less you seem to know"...and that's quite frustrating because I'm impatient with learning. That's the same issue with Latin. Sad
All the same, I'll always prefer English, which seems to me much more easier. Laughing

Well, at least, we have the same opinion concerning English ! Laughing
I must admit that learning German is quite frustrating. After more than 10 hours per week during three years in highschool, I'm far from being bilingual. So, it's really difficult to get fluent in German, unless you spend several months/years in Germany... I can understand that with three or four hours (I don't know how it works in other highschools) of German, you find it difficult. Now, with German literature, and three years spent in my highschool, where thirty pupils out of hundred are German, I start to get less and less frustrated, endlich ! Mr. Green

And I'll tell you what, it's really brilliant to understand German, while the rest of your friends don't get a single word when German people speak... You feel pretty clever at this very moment

You don't have the same "pride" with English. Today, everyone must speak English (even scientists... grrrr). But pride is one thing, quite useless when you take a closer look. However, German appears tu be useful, when you sit for an exam for instance. As only a few people study German, there's consequently less competition ! Mr. Green

Citation:
"But now,I don't need to learn the whole English grammar to talk with other English people. That's why I think English is much more easier. (That's not the same thing for German, not at all...)"

I quite agree with you on this very issue... In German, you always have to think: do I have to put the verb at the beginning or at the end? is this preposition followed by accusative or dative case? Or genitive perhaps? what does the verb leiden become in preterit?

So many questions, that don't exist at all in English. Yes, English has also its difficulties, but I'm still convinced that English is far more instinctive than German. To me, at least, it is... Laughing

And indeed, German is philosophy's language... I know it by heart, because philosophy in my highschool was often in German... Kant is pretty difficult in French. But you don't know how hard it is in German. You can't figure this out, unless you read it. It's just... awful. That's all Greek to me. Just thinking about it still gives me creeps!

I hate philosophy... because of my highschool teacher. I hope my future teacher will be nicer, and will make philosophy a little bit more attractive...

However, I loooove Philosophie Magazine Mr. Green

To put it in a nutshell, to me, German as the philosophy's language isn't a good reason to like it, or to find it charming (philosophy... charming?????)... German as Goethe's mothertongue, as Zweig's, yes. Literature or poetry are charming. That's some lovely reading. But philosophy isn't that beautiful.

But, after all, it's all a matter of feeling... I wish I were more interested in philosophy [let's dream...]

That reminds me that... I still have three books to read for philosophy... Descartes, here I come...  Rolling Eyes

I spent some weeks in "Deutschland". It was a great experience, 'cause German people are quite amazing. I'm lucky, thanks to these trips, I caught an acceptable accent ( Laughing )But I know pretty well that it was not enough. Did you spend several months in Germany?

You're wright. Laughing  Speaking German fluently is sooo elegant!(But you'd better be fluent,or pretty good so as not to be ridiculous Mr. Green !) Unfortunatly, I cannot talk with my friends, they only speak spanish...But having a real conversation in German, that is gratifying. And I'm not able to forgive my pride, that's why I have never given up German. Muhahaha...
I'm looking forwards studying German literature. I hope that I'll won't suffer too much^^
I think I had a bad German teacher,as you had a bad one in Philosophy...

oooh my God...What does the verb leiden become in preteriiiit?
If you think that English is more instinctive than German, it may be because English is closer to French?

I think that I can imagine Kant in German; It would seem to me it's some hell in a book. Mr. Green  Nietzsche may be better,in German. Or even Freud, why not?I actually don't know.
Kant in french is already former greek, for me.^^

I didn't have the chance to spend several weeks in Germany. Only two weeks actually: a week in 2nd, with our exchange students (Austauschschüler Cool ), and a week in 1ère in Berlin, a trip for the end of the year. But in my highschool, there were thirty pupils out of hundred who were German, so you get used quite fast to the accent, and we lived for three years in a living Franco-German cosmos ^^

I agree, German people are really really friendly.

I also agree that speaking German when you're not fluent is really ridiculous (cf Segolene Royal trying to speak German...)  Laughing

Leiden, litt, gelitten

Now you know it Laughing

English is closer to French, indeed, but as well for Spanish, and I don't find Spanish really instinctive... As regards the vocabulary, it does look like French, but the language in itself... I don't know, I've never been fond of this language anyway...  Rolling Eyes

The funny thing is, German becomes instinctive to me thanks to English. As English comes from German, I begin to see loads of similarities between the two languages! (but I may be a little crazy Mr. Green )

I've already read Plato (Phèdre), quite interesting actually. But I don't know how one can love philosophy... ^^'
My teacher was really horrible. Even worse than the whole bibliography of Kant !!!!!!! Confused

Because of him I only had a "favorable" opinion for Lakanal (with an average of 14 in philosophy... ahem, pretty logical...), while the other teachers wanted to put a "very favorable" opinion... But I go to Lakanal, hihi, even with his depreciation!

When you strike the Empire... the Empire strikes back !

It is a torture. I swear Laughing

14 in philosophy is neither bad nor good, but with him, the best pupil of my class had an average of 15.
And the scientists who had him as teacher in 1ère (we study philosophy during two years in my highschool, not only in terminale), had - lucky of them - a different teacher in terminale, and a girl, who had 9 in 1ère with him, had an average of 17 in terminale, and had sit for the Concours général of philosophy this year... So... Philosophy is quite subjective, depending on your teacher.

I'm happy to learn that some philosophy teachers can be considered as "a kind of God" =). It reassures me a little.

Philosophy as a kind of poetry... why not. Am not convinced for some philosophers such as Kant, Descartes, or Spinoza, for instance...  Rolling Eyes

But once again, philosophy is purely subjective. As well as literature.

Call me Vader. Darth Vader.
